In the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science Department, our faculty are experts in precision engineering, motorsports engineering, bioengineering, metrology, computational methods, mechanics and materials. Our programs are nationally recognizes, preparing students to succeed in any discipline of mechanical engineering they choose.

Our undergraduate curriculum is driven by our design sequence, which starts in the freshman year with the hands-on team projects of Introduction to Engineering. In their second year, students begin using the machine shop as they build air-powered engines. As juniors, they focus on electromechanical systems, and begin using rapid prototyping technology to build robots in their junior design class. The culmination of the design sequence is senior design, in which students take on a variety of more complex design/build projects, including multidisciplinary projects sponsored by the college's industrial partners.

For undergraduate students interested in deepening their knowledge and experience in Motorsports or Energy engineering, the department offers concentrations in each of these areas.

Our committment to applying engineering knowledge continues at the graduate level, where students study with top research faculty to develop solutions to real-world problems. Research efforts are then taken to the next level, as they are put into action through patents, licensing and spin-off companies.
