PhD Student Checklist

Selection of Advisor First Semester   Student should select a primary advisor who will assist in forming an advisory committee and an appropriate plan of study
Plan of Study Second Semester Phd Plan of Study

Must include: 72 hours of credit beyond the baccalaureate degree including at least:
- 45 hours of course work comprised of at least 6 hours of graduate (6000-level or above) mathematics and at least 18 hours of MEES coursework. Graduate (6000-level or above) courses from outside the department may qualify, but must be approved by the Graduate Coordinator as part of the student's Plan of Study.
- 18 hours of research/dissertation
- Additional coursework is expected for students who do not possess appropriate bachelors and/or master's degrees in engineering.

Transfer of Credit **For transfer students wishing to apply graduate credit from an MSME degree, another institution, or post-baccalaureate status   Please consult with the Graduate Student Services Specialist for assistance with transfer of credit - a maximum of 30 hours may be transferred to a PhD program

Students may take examination twice. Failure to pass results in termination of enrollment in Ph.D. program

Graduation Information

Student must list all classes and grades for the PhD program for a total of 72 credit hours.

Form must be approved and signed by the Graduate Coordinator.

Submit form to department –form forwarded to graduate school.

Schedule Dissertation Defense

Submission of Dissertation Abstract

Prior to defense  

Visit department for scheduling assistance.

Email the Graduate Coordinator and Student Services Specialist with the following details for public announcement:

Dissertation Defense Report for Doctoral Candidates

Grade Change Form

Submit completed defense report with signatures to department – form forwarded to graduate school.

Change of grade for IP courses will be submitted to the Registrar’s Office following submission of successful defense report.

Submission of Dissertation

After successful defense, by the deadline indicated by the Graduate School – see UNC Charlotte Academic Calendar.

Dissertations must be approved by the Graduate School prior to final submission. Please make an appointment for preliminary review with the Graduate School well in advance of the dissertation submission deadline.
