Admissions Requirements for Early-Entry into the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME)

Admission Requirements

Exceptional undergraduate students at UNC Charlotte may be accepted into the graduate program and begin work toward a graduate degree before completion of the baccalaureate degree.

To be accepted into this program, an undergraduate student must have:

  • completed 75 or more semester credit hours

It is expected that close to 90 hours will have been earned by the time the first graduate course is taken.

  • an overall GPA of at least 3.2
  • a satisfactory score on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE.

Early-entry students who do not meet normal admission requirements of a 2.75 overall undergraduate GPA and a 3.0 junior-senior GPA at the end of the baccalaureate degree will be dismissed from the graduate program.

Students accepted into an early-entry program will be subject to the same policies that pertain to other matriculated graduate students. Students may take no more than fifteen (15) hours of graduate coursework prior to completion of the baccalaureate degree.

Up to six hours earned at the graduate level may be substituted for required undergraduate hours (that is, up to six hours of graduate work may be "double counted" toward both baccalaureate and graduate degrees.)

Application Instructions

Applicants for Early-Entry admission to the Master of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering should adhere to the same admissions instructions as outlined for regular graduate admission.

Why early entry?

For students with an outstanding academic record, early entry allows you to begin completing graduate credit hours ahead of schedule, accelerating the completion of a graduate degree. It also offers the opportunity to begin research at the graduate-level.
