MOTORSPORTS CONCENTRATION IN MOTORSPORTS ENGINEERINGThis is an area of concentrated study intended for students interested in a career in Motorsports or Automotive Engineering. Students with a GPA of 2.5 or better may apply for admission to this concentration area after successfully completing PHYS 2101 & 2101L, MATH 1241 & 1242, and MEGR 2141, all with a grade of C or better (generally before entering the 2nd semester of the sophomore year). Applications are available in the ME office (Duke 380). The curriculum is slightly more restrictive than the basic BSME curriculum and includes the following requirements: - All technical electives must be chosen from an approved list of courses. Choices include: Automotive Power Plants (MEGR 3210), Discrete Mechanical Vibrating Systems (MEGR 4143), Intermediate Fluid Mechanics (MEGR 4112) and Vehicle Aerodynamics, Vehicle Road Dynamics (MEGR 3211), Intermediate Dynamics (MEGR 4144) and Finite Element Analysis (see the SAE faculty advisor for the current list of approved courses).
- Projects completed in Project Lab I & II must be approved by the instructor as a suitable automotive related project.
- Motorsports Engineering Clinic I (MEGR 2299) replaces Professional Development (MEGR 3299) in the standard curriculum and is generally taken in the sophomore year.
- Motorsports Engineering Clinic II & III take the place of Senior Design I & II and involve automotive related projects.
INTERCOLLEGIATE AUTO RACING ASSOCIATION (ICARA)The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science oversees a student team competing in events sanctioned by the Intercollegiate Auto Racing Association (ICARA). This is an extra-curricular activity and participation on this team is open to students in the College of Engineering. Conference eligibility requirements are available from the ICARA conference organization and can be obtained by contacting the Dean's office. UNC Charlotte team members must apply to participate and are reviewed by the faculty advisors prior to selection. The student team competes against other universities in auto racing events using a Legends car on several tracks in the southeast. The team includes drivers, crew, team captain or crew chief, and business managers. Team member responsibilities are set and supervised by the faculty advisor and team captain.
